Difficult Fixing In Window Recess

I’m trying to fit a blind to my window but when I drill I go through 12mm plasterboard then about 15mm gap then I hit something a bit like diamond. I’ve used my newest masonry bit with hammer action and I cannot dent it! I’m guessing it’s the lintel but if it was concrete I could drill it and if it was steel it would make a different noise!?

Concrete lintels are incredibly hard, as you have discovered.

Can you use hollow wall fixings on the plasterboard? They would have to be small ones as there isn't much space.

Yes, probably reinforced concrete, Iggle.
You can get the same problem with porcelain tiles blunting all known drill types.

What you need is an SDS drill. (Slotted drive system.)
A completely different kind of hammer-drill.

Advisory note to OP...

Mains powered SDS drills are particularly heavy. Effective - Yes, extremely. Other features are a cold chisel bit and spike attachments, great for breaking up concrete blocks.

However, erring on the side of caution, I would never work off a ladder with one!

The battery powered options are less than half the weight but tend to be more 'pricey'. Effective - Unknown since I have yet to use one.

Thanks fellas, I’ve gone with ‘toggle’ type spring loaded anchors. I even had to cut the thread down on these because of lack of space!

Another approach is to attach a wooden batton with adhesive and fix the blind to that.
