Can anyone tell me when to prune/cut back peonies? Lots of conflicting advice out there and I'm fairly new to gardening so any pruning advice greatly appreciated. Many thanks. BB

This is my way.I have had a peonie bush now for 20 years. After it finishes flowering I cut it right back and every year it gets bigger and more roses on it .I am no expert but I believe trim right back and it is better the following year.
I was always under the impression that they died down each year when the frosts arrive and you cut the dead off then. They re-grow in the spring !!!
If its the shruby species of Paeony, It can be pruned back after flowering occaisionally to keep it to the size and shape you want but annual pruning is not neccessary.

For hebaceous perenials, remove dead flowers as they fade and cut back foliage after it has died in the autumn.
