...about the legionnaire who speared Jesus as he hung on the cross.
I like to think that this act was an attempt to administer a merciful coup de Grace rather than a piece of gratuitous violence.
Any thoughts?

No,p,it wasnt.Some Biblical scholars did some research on the Star of Bethlehem and discovered that it befell approximately between 10BC and 8BC.It was widely thought that Jesus was born circa 6BC.What i stated was the truth.Jesus Christ was born 6 years BC.(Before Christ).
Nobody knows if there was a Jesus crucified at that time and nobody knows what that time would have been. I hope no-one here is serious about what the details might be.

I expect it was routine stabbing to keep the whole business from going on too long and to spare the poor beggar unnecessary suffering.

that's the usual interpretation, I've always been told. In the days when "hanging" just meant leaving you there till you strangled, kind friends would sometimes pull the victim's legs to hasten the process.
