In 29a, is Jock's cold a 4 letter word beginning with J?
What is the original length of answer for 43a?
29a is a 4 letter answer (the thematic inside is two words 2,3) but it starts 'w' (and is a double def - 1st part Scots dialect).
43a 8 letters to begin with.

I now have a complete grid.
The 13 extra letters make no sense but I have added words that mean plenty in thematic grid entries.
No idea where they are significant.
The 13 letters are Latin - 3 words (6,2,5), hankir.
...but you've got the right idea.
Entering England's smallest county is where you'll see the Latin phrase (by the roadside, I imagine).

Found the Latin phrase. (I had one letter wrong).
Still not sure where they are significant.
Where am I starting the highlight?
Have you done a search for 'England's smallest county', hankir?
