I have often wondered how many wheelie bins councils require to be used in different areas. In West Norfolk we leave out a green recycling bin and a black general waste bin with one left on alternate weeks, and a grey food waste caddy every week. I hear some areas have three or four bins?.

There are 39 different sets of rules across the UK about what can go into recycling bins - and that's only for plastic! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-45496884

I don’t understand people who say they never have ANY food waste. Yes I try my best to avoid wastage but there are always some things which cannot be used.
We have a compost system at home that gets veg peelings etc. But the council food caddy gets the things that would not rot down easily in our heap- such as meat/fish bones, melon and pineapple skins.
Should have mentioned in Tamworth if we want a green garden waste bin it's £36 a year. I would think everyone has food waste - vegetable and fruit peelings go in my compost bin but meat bones, fish skin etc goes in general black bin, well wrapped up.
My hot compost bin takes all that stuff, jazzy. I chop tough skins like pineapple and melon in to small pieces first.
We have one of the highest recycling rates in the country...because our council make it dead easy - ALL recycling goes into one green wheelie bin...glass, paper, cardboard, metal, textiles...even shredded paper (bagged). You can leave dead batteries and electrical items on top.
Food waste caddy every week - such a good idea.
GingeJbee - Your council seems to be on the ball. Where in the country are you?
We have a black waste bin, brown garden compost bin, food compost bin and 3 recycling tubs.
Recycling and food collected weekly and the other’s alternative weeks
sandy, I find myself unable to digest the skins or the stones from avocados so into the food waste they go.
Repeat with Location. Hayling Island (Havant Borough Council)
Two free, green for recyclable, black for non-recyclable. One chargeable, brown for garden waste.

All my food waste (which is food preparation waste like potato peelings, carrot tops, eggshells, etc.; I eat all my edible food) goes into my wormery to produce valuable fertiliser for my vegetable garden.
Our general waste bin here on the Norfolk Broads, is green! So confusing for visitors to a busy tourist area.

Grey bin for all recyclables, and batteries, textiles or electrical items can be left in a small bag beside the bin.

Food waste caddy is collected each week, but we compost all of ours and have yet to create any.
We have a grey bin for general waste clear sacks for recycling. A small caddy for food waste and green for garden waste
Here in Mid-Suffolk it's the same as it is where Canary42 is.

i.e. We have a green bin for recyclable waste and a black one for everything else, collected on alternate weeks. Residents can also have a brown bin for garden waste if they're prepared to pay a little extra.

As examples of how things differ, in most of the country you either can't put glass bottles and jars out with your recycling or else you have to put them in a separate container. In Dover though, glass can go into the recycling wheelie bin, whereas paper and card has to go into a separate box:

Here in Mid-Suffolk, they keep changing the rules. At one time empty bleach bottles couldn't go into recycling bins but now they can. They also used to accept textiles, placed in a separate bag on top of a recycling bin, but now they don't.
Four wheelie's, and a small bin for food waste.

Grey (general)
Green (garden waste) + "small food bin" one week.

Blue (paper) etc
Orange (glass, tin) etc + "small food bin" the other.
paper, glass and plastic bottles are all recyclables here, but I do check plastic things for the little triangles. It's annoying that film has to be separated from otherwise recyclable objects such as microwave meals, I must waste several seconds every year doing this.
