i wouldnt know but why doesnt he try applying for the manchester airport? or local places like supermarket, surely you wouldnt need skills for that?
There are a number of agencies about who do industrial assignments who could at least try and find him some temporary if not permanent work. One could always lead to the other as well.

There are quite a few in town, not 100% sure on the industrial side but they will have websites to check. He could try Blue Arrow (I think) on Princess St, Brook Street up on Spring Gardens, maybe Polaris on Brown St. Prime Time on St James' Sq too. Best to check if they cover the type of work he is looking for first though. They might be able to suggest other agencies if not.

Supermarket warehouse work could be an idea and plenty of them round this way.
Does he drive? Round here there are vacancies for delivery drivers, and you can drive quite a large van on an ordinary licence.
whatabout trying barwork, or give the post a try, a postman.
Has he tried applying for a job as a milkman ,he may like it.It will afford him the opportunity to look for a job during the day if he doesn't like it.
It may only be a short term solution for him but at least he'll have an income ,if he does like it then the skies the limit with regard to income.
There is a dairy in Stockport has he ever tried being a milkman.I used to be a butcher and when I closed my shop I applied to be a milkman and got a milk-round.
It's early mornings but it's a job requiring no skill and it pays reasonably well.I was able to go back to college and train as an electrician.Even if he just gets his name into the dairy, there may be other jobs.If I'm not mistaken the dairy is on Stockholm road Stockport.

Good luck
