The plot for this episode made sense until the end. If Sgt Fraser wanted to kill his wife, it made sense for him to steal a car whilst on duty and then quickly return to duty as if nothing had happened. But when it was revealed he wasn't the murderer somebody else was, I couldn't understand his motive for stealing the car and going back home in the middle of an investigation. Obviously I've missed something, why did he steal the car and return home if not to murder his wife? If it was just to check up on her, seems crazy to risk using your job just for that.

He stole the car to mislead the viewers
Sorry, I don't recall this episode but am totally confused because Stuart (Fraser) was gay and never had a wife. Can someone explain please?
