It's all very well having a secret spoken formula, until the villains get to learn about it. If the perp* is within earshot then the victim will be caught out, if not within earshot then why not just say "I'm being threatened".

A "hidden" signal (i.e. one the perp can't see) is surely safer.

*perp=the one causing the threat - the perpetrator.

Of course, the shame is that it should even be necessary.
'If the perp* is within earshot then the victim will be caught out'

Hopefully if the potential 'perp' hears her say that (and knows about the scheme) they should run away.
Canary, it is comforting to know that some places have thought about the problem and have made an effort to make customers feel safer. Well done to them.
Perp? Suspect, shurely. Anyway, book him Danno.
Of course, that is why cockney was used - to communicate without the old bill understanding. But as you say once known it is pointless.
"But as you say once known it is pointless."

It's been around since 2015 and it is working still. It might well be that more women than men are aware of it because they are the ones more likely to need the assistance.

I was aware there is a code word that can be used but I could not have said what the name was.
I do not think that just because it is known about it become pointless. It is an extremely quick way of communicating to someone who may be able to help that you need help. "Is Angela working tonight?" is 4 words that conveys that quickly so that immediate action can be taken, rather than trying to explain the situation in a potentially crowded and noisy area.
Neither do I think it's pointless even if everyone knows it.

More useful perhaps is the....I'm in danger....help....hand signal which has saved lives and should be known to everyone.
