The burglars were attempting to break in to the garage, not the house. They didn't manage to steal anything and were trying to escape.
Yes, they are lowlife scum and I do wish the sentences were harsher for this type of crime but their victim was not defending himself or his property. He was not being attacked, he was chasing them.
