How Often To Replace Household Items

I came across this on Facebook (link shows screendump) https://ibb.co/GtmFwbK and was gobsmacked at some of the figures. I wasn’t even aware of the microwave filter.

I don’t know anything about it, but in my cynical view it just might be marketing-backed.

In case you have trouble with any of the links, here is the list of items, and how frequently they should be replaced. (Needless to say, I’m well over the limits with most items, and have no intention of changing.)

I am posting this in Chatterbank to reflect my disdain for the “advice” ;-)


Sponge: When it’s stinky
Shower Curtain Liner: 3 months
Microwave charcoal filter: 6 months
Toilet brush: 6-12 months
Bed pillows: 1-2 years
Bath Mat: 18-24 months
Sheets: 2 years
Bath Towels: 2 years
Non-stick cookware: 5 years
Mattress: 6-8 years
Couch: 7-15 years
Throw pillow: 5-10 years
Duvet inset: 10-15 years
Smoke Detector: 10 years
Smaa kitchen appliances: 10-12 years
Doormat: When the bristles wear down
Curtains: When faded, stained or frayed

Toilet brushes. I agree every few months , but I may switch to a natural one and keep it longer as I hate non recyclable plastics.

A good idea. I was recently "conned" into buying one online which was meant to be much better than conventional ones (it used a rubber stippled pad instead of a brush). An absolute failure as it was a much filthier task to clean it as faecal matter got stuck between the stipples. So be warned, if you see it advertised, stay away.

One of the bog brushes in out house was just shy of £50. That will be lasting 10 years!

Wifes looking a bit tired these days too, have to look for anew model.
