Perhaps this chap is in a position where his business can survive - so can resist the temptation of a million folding .

Other hoteliers who have accepted cash might not be in the same position , given the financial crisis we have / are still going through .

Everything isn't always black n white
"Quite honestly my wife and I felt repulsed and very angry"
Why? there's a large amount of hyperbole there surely. Why would someone offering to use your business and you politely declining cause you to be very angry?
Man sets up business offering to rent rooms to people. People ask if they can rent rooms. He doesnt like their terms to says no. They say ok then. what is there in there to get repulsed and angry about?
"We didn’t consider the offer for at all as our reputation would have been shattered overnight.

'Quite honestly my wife and I felt repulsed and very angry that they would think I would ever consider it.'"

Considering the fact that other hotels have accepted contracts with the Home Office how are its officials expected to know how individual owners will react?

t's a culture thing bednobs - he didn't go into business to set up a transit camp for migrants however lucrative. If you can't see the difference then I despair.
It would only have been lucrative in the short term. As he says, his business reputation (which has probably taken years to build) would have been destroyed. He's not making any moral or political stance here, he's just a good businessman.

I think what there is to get angry about is this: Mr Martin has spent 30 years building up a thriving business (and it is a good place – I’ve been there). To accept the government’s offer he would have to cancel literally hundreds of weddings – they have bookings into 2025. He would also have to make most of his staff redundant. I think his anger stems from the fact that no research seems to have been done into the nature of his business, and the repercussions that would follow from accepting the offer. No consideration seems to have been given to the strong possibility that, although the deal was only for 12 months, it would more than likely be extended (because there is no sign of the Channel Crossings abating) and even if it wasn’t, the likelihood is that his business would have been permanently trashed. After all, who would trust a hotel to host their nuptials when it is fickle enough to accept a fast buck and dump the couple’s plans so unceremoniously?

Yes, he could have simply refused the offer and said no more. But what is happening across the country needs to be highlighted because many of those who seem to be welcoming these cross-Channel chancers so readily have really no idea the problems it is causing.

The argument will come “Cancelling your wedding is a small price to pay to allow a few asylum seekers some decent shelter.” It isn’t, as any bride and groom will tell you – especially if most of those people are not genuinely in need of asylum in the UK at all.

By doing a little research into the nature of the businesses they propose to trash. Or better still, by not seeking to negotiate such contracts at all with anybody.

"They" usually do Judge ... they prefer to "do business" with the multi chain hotels, such as Hilton Continental, who are owned by overseas companies and individuals who have no interest in the local populace and who according to some on here appear to have no entrepreneurial acumen or concept of future prospects in the area. Unless they are being promised that this will be ongoing for years to come.

It probably will be - watch this space!

how do you epect them to do that NJ without contacting the proprietors and asking if they are interested?
good for him, sadly many hotels haven't followed suit and now we see the results. Barmy
Set up detention camps or allow them to roam freely
they have done both 1ozzy, and now we see the results. as i said it's barmy
Good for him.

yes it is in a business decision - if it aint, you go out of business quicko

you have receipts before tax, £1m - for one year
expenses, running the place ( whatever that is,) paying off staff you dont keep ( cd be big) - cancellation fees on your side, lots, putting the place back when they go

and it may be more than £1m - result er-er ( sound of rejecctio)

NOW.... gubmint had a scheme whereby they paid 30% over housing benefit but THEY named the tenants. ( 20-30 y ago)
and I said - they only put in problem tenants that have smashed up their last house dont they?
and all the neighbours said "yes"
contacting the proprietors and asking if they are interested?

sounds like head-hunters who werent quite sure what they were selling () besides the big figure of £1m)

bammy indeed
