I thought he wrote about true crime. Perhaps that was someone with the same name.

He probably established his reputation by writing on true crime.
The cinema films might have posed as entertainments, but I thought them anything but.
I don't remember any specific film - but weren't they introduced by the same creepy music and was it a profile or silhouette of the gentleman himself - or am I mixing it up with Hitchcock (it was a long time ago).
He had a series recently on cable on Talking Pictures. But I remember the TV series from the late 50'/60's. I seem to recall it was quite popular.

I think he & Hitchcock were similar in their TV roles - the adjective I would use is lugubrious.
