….except for us, of course.

/Ministers have agreed windfall taxes on certain energy companies as well as mandatory cuts in electricity use.
The plan includes a levy on fossil fuel firms' surplus profits and a levy on excess revenues made from surging electricity costs.
The cash raised is expected to go to families and businesses./

If only eh, if only….

If only what? If only this?:

"The cash raised is expected to go to families and businesses."

Are you once again falling for the idea that politicians are telling the truth about what they intend to do? "...expected to go to..." means we haven't really decided where it will go to and will let you know how we will waste it at a later date.

The idea that the answer to everything is "more tax" needs to be discounted.

The other idea mentioned - mandatory cuts in electricity use - is rationing by any other name. Are you suggesting that rationing householders and industries on their energy usage is a good model for the future?
// mandatory cuts in electricity use //

like during the miner's strike in 1972? where i lived at the time (london borough of hillingdon) the power was completely off on a rota basis, one day in 3 or 4, during the day (not sure when, i wasn't there), and between 6pm and 9pm. most street lighting was off 24/7 except on main roads, and some traffic lights were switched off.
How can anyone possibly argue against a windfall tax in such circumstances?

Tories, basically…..and for greed and selfish reasons only, there are no others.
O am happy with windfall taxes in principle if cos are ripping us off....but can someone which energy firms should get a windfall tax. Presumably not all the ones that have gone bust or are not making abig profit.
Can someone SAY ...

Posters like fatticus talk in general terms but never list or even give examples of cos they mean and how much profit there making
That's right, Fatti, and our resident Tories aren't that great at rational argument anyway

It was spelt out to you in several links in that thread. You failed to read them, just persisted with your Pythonesque Black Knight routine.
