We are going to purchase a kiln.It will need 3 phase electrics . Does anyone know what this means and can this easily be installed into a domestic supply. If so is this a very expensive thing to do. Sorry don't know what 3 phase means although I have heard of it.

In simple terms: 3-phase is 'industrial standard' electricity, used when more power than single phase (as used in domestic supplies) can realistically supply. It isn't very likely that your house has it already.

It is quite likely you will need the supply to your house re-laying, from the nearest 3-phase source. I would imagine this would be quite pricey, yes, though it depends upon yuor actual circumstances.
I'd avoid buying a 3 phase kiln if I were you.

Saw one guy in the US talking about $10,000 quotes for installing 3 phase!
Ouch!!
3 phase is usually 420 volts, domestic is around 250
When electricity is generated it has 3 phases. These 3 phases (and a neutral) are fed to industrial supplies. Domestic supplies use only 1 of these phases and the neutral. Generally all 3 phases are in the road, and each phase is used alternately for the supply of each house in the street.

That said, I agree with the previous answer that while it may be possible to have all three phases brought ino your house, the electricity company will want a good reason and a large amount of money. They will probably put you on a business tariff for your supply. Probably best to steer clear of this particular kiln and get a regular singe phase one.
You probably wont get much change out of 4 - 5 thousand pounds & your electricity bills for the whole house not just for the kiln will go up to industrial rates ... Hope your a millionair or stay well clear of 3 phase if i were you.
