toisech toshach, toshich
I think the Turkish cap has to be spelt with a 'C'...ie calpac. If it isn't, I'm wrong with 21 across! The 'c' comes from that old crossword trick of using the word 'see' as code...ie sounds like 'c'.
Question Author
i had put a c for calpac because I had scop for 21 ac quiz am i wrong?
21A is 'ache'...the Shakespearean (bard) way of spelling 'aitch' and, of course, 'ache' means 'long'.
I should have added above that 'h' is the second letter in Shakespeare.
See = C in crosswords, not because it sounds like the letter C but because one of its meanings in Chambers is the letter C.

I

thanks for the explanations ich and quiz they are much appreciated
The reason it's spelt 'see', Ich, is precisely because it sounds like 'C'! In the same way, 'tee' is that letter's name because it makes the appropriate sound. The word 'tee' in a clue, therefore, might mean the letter, a golfer's peg, the target in curling etc.
