After having fixed braces for 2 years my next door neighbours daughter has to have retainer braces after Christmas. Any idea how long these are likely to be worn for?

Thank you andy - they just seem to be everywhere but as you have explained it is progress
The alternative to a 'removable' retainer is to have a 'fixed' retainer. A small wire bonded to the inside of the inside of the front teeth, thus acting as a 'splint'. Whilst in-situ, there is little chance of the teeth moving. It can be worn for many years.
I had a brace when I was 11. Wore it for a year, then had a plate 'temporarily' fixed behind the teeth to keep them in the place the had been pulled to. It's still there. I am 31.
Usually a year or two. But after having braces when I was a teenager and only wearing mine for a year or so.....I wish I would have kept my retainer and wore it for five yrs even more AT NIGHT....just to keep teeth straight. As years go by your teeth eventually shift more, and do not stay as straight as they were after getting braces off. :)
