It depends on the parameters you use.

Technically, probably Django Reinhardt who, despite the lose of two fingers, still made playing a steel-string acoustic, they have fiendishly high actions, sound like falling off the proverbial log.

For modern electric guitar, Hendix or Page.

For classical interperetation I'd go for Julian Bream, but for classicall technique, I'd go with John Williams.

For sheer inventiveness and pazazz - Jack White.

The list goes on, ane veryone's will be like mine - personal choices, because there is no 'best' in the true definition of the word.
As Andy says, depends on the genre.

Juan Martin - Flamenco
Brian May - Rock
John Williams - Classical

But then I saw Norman Wot-Roy of the Blockheads performing on Bass recently, and he has to win the prize for sheer entertainment value.
Jimi hendrix
zack wild and slash and brain may are the 3 best guitar player
hendrix hendrix hendrix, the proof is in the pudding and no one has been able to even match his genius despite dying 35 years ago! his work is beyond genius!

depends on the type of guitar......... Mick Karn from JAPAN could make a fretless bass talk
If you're a fan of Indie music, Johnny Marr is worth a mention.

Other favourites of mine include Bill Nelson, Larry Carlton, Earl Klugh, John McLaughlin and Al di Meola.
dav gillmore pink floyd
For me too it has to be Dave Gilmour - Genius.
Obviously this is all down to personal taste ... but its difficult to leave Eric Clapton and Rory Gallagher off the list .....
