What?
“But it's their choice whether or not to use them... and so it should be for anything that's legal.”

But it’s like anything else we don’t allow children - or in this case young people - to do. And they could still smoke: it would just make it harder for them to buy. Whether anything will come of this tho is another matter. It does seem a bit vague.

barry: "A lot of vapers choose nicotine free, drm " - what's the kin point then?
Because of lot of smokers miss the routine of smoking, the doing something with their hands, the hand to mouth movement and sucking when they try to stop smoking.
Some use nicotine free vapes with the nicotine patches.
Ich, why do you keep ignoring the word 'adult'? Children do a lot of things they shouldn't do but that doesn't mean that adults should be denied their rights and their choices. If the government want to stop people smoking, stop them. Ban it.
Changing the age limit will not solve anything. How much extra money are the police to be given to implement this plan ?
Under age drinking has gone on for decades, yet every weekend our towns are full of drunk (or stoned) youth.

This is a the Government merely making the right noises, but not spending a penny to make the policy work. So it won’t work.
Gromit, in the UK it is not illegal for children to smoke although police do have the power to confiscate cigarettes from under 16s.
The law is aimed at the shops that sell to children

Naomi: 10:02, isn't that a bit heavy handed? this way it gets phased out gently, surely you can see that.
Perhaps - but honest.
Why not just raise it by 150 years now and have done with it ?
As other people have pointed out, this has already been done in NZ, so it is not genius merely a copy cat policy. Same goes for 'this visionary government'.
//... this way it gets phased out gently, surely you can see that.//

The plan will see smoking phased out gently. But it will have an immediate effect on young people. All those aged 17 at the time of the change would never be able to smoke. The main difficulty I see is when, in say fifty years time, the age has been raised to 68, then 69 year olds will be asked for proof of age when they attempt to buy 10 Woodbines.
but will 68 year olds be willing to take out a mortgage to buy 10 woodies?
a packet of Regal Blue costs more than £14 now. A combination of high prices and stopping young people ever starting to smoking seems the sensible way to go.
Banning won't work. Eventually smokers will die out, one way or another.
Not sure raising the age until no one can buy them would ever work.

NZ seem to be a bit different, seems they have set a date which if you are born after you can never buy them. Perhaps thats the best way?

Personally I think it needs a multi pronged attack with tax, very graphic education (to youngsters) and the NZ idea.
NJ, 11:37.
10 Woodbines! Don't exist any more. One of the bad recent developments has been the removal of packets of 10. They were useful for people trying to wean themselves off by sticking to a packet a day. Now you have to be strong-willed enough not to dip into your packet for another when you've already had your 10.
a puff of a senior service and some would kak themselves, back in the day, some dad would say to there wannabe smoker child, erm have a puff on this large cigar and you must breath it in, as for a total ban mmm its possible over time i suppose, there is a lot of money in tobacco products and interests in that.
