this might seem daft but to save me the journey, are banks open on saturdays? can i actually go into one? thanks for your help.

Yes they are.

I work for one of the big 5 (HSBC), and some of ours open from 10am-2pm, other, bigger branches, 9am-5pm. Some of our branches close at 7pm on a Thursday also.

You may find there is no counter service though - only cash machines and sales staff.
