nothing! I've just done this massive clear out. Only now I can hardly move the rubbish bin there are so many jars of bolognese sauce and chick peas in it.
jno; How can you throw away tins of chickpeas? Bolognese sauce I uinderstand; it's got meat in it.
they were (notionally) past their date, and I don't want them. If they'd been within the date I'd have donated them to the supermarket charity bin.
I'm not sure how long some stuff has been at the back of my kitchen cupboard but I ate a can of stew that was 12 years past its 'best before' date recently. (It was absolutely fine). I suspect that there are several other cans of similar vintage lurking in there somewhere ;-)

When I saw the title of this post ("What's The Most Out Of Date Item..."), I thought that the sentence was going to end with " . . . in your house". I'd have had no problem at all in answering that question. It's me!
Many years ago I took a jar of jam, Robinsons I think, they still had the golliwog on them, out of my mother's fridge. No sell by dates then but there was a competion advertised on it that had closed........17 years previously!!
I think cans last forever; and so do jars if they are properly sealed.
