The Scottish government are proposing that people get a licence before they can buy or set off fireworks, and that has made me very happy!

Hope that happens, Maggie. The difference living where fireworks are illegal without a difficult to obtain licence is bliss. Yes there will be some brought in from the north but the penalty for possessing them is high.
No more weeks of anti social fireworks is wonderful.
The only times we hear/see fireworks here in Ontario are May 24th and July 1st, and they are mostly set off at organized displays. For the rest of the year...Nothing.
BARRY, they could travel to England to buy the fireworks but once back in Scotland, they'd need a licence to possess or use them.
That's as maybe, Corby. It's currently illegal to set fireworks off at certain times of the night but they often are and nobody is charged for it.
Too many to catch maybe, Barry. Because it happens far less often here it's easy for guards to catch those who try and for them to be prosecuted which does happen.
Don't get too excited about Scotland introducing a new law regarding fireworks. Northern Ireland have banned them for years with penalties of £5000 fine and three months in jail. I've friends who live there and on various visits during the year and over a long period of years, I still hear fireworks going off, I've even seen roadside signs advertising them for sale. It's obvious the quite severe penalties aren't working, people will always find a way to access fireworks if they really want to.
Our Nicola will take no lessons in firework outlawing from those who, in the past have let off fireworks, etc.

It's the job of the fourteen remaining officers in Police Scotland to apprehend the miscreants.

Now, moving on to independence...
