Why are soaps so popular? The writing and acting of pretty much all soaps is rubbish and the story lines aren't very realistic, so why so popular?

cuz it takes u away from real life n is a bit of an escape i guess. oh and it makes u realise ur life could be a whole lot worse even if it is fake! i only watch a couple of soaps honestly!
Theyre a damn sight more realistic than the government!!!
AND more believable!
EastEnders: because James Alexandrou is in it
Neighbours: because Kyal Marsh is in it
I've always felt that part of the reason is the 'cliffhanger' effect. Alright, its not as extreme as the old Saturday morning film series, but it is easy to find yourself wondering what is going to happen to a certain character and you find yourself watching the next episode to find out - and the next - and the next. I try to avoid soaps (but I have seen the odd Neighbours and I am still intrigued to know what happened to Connor).
