Does any one know what this means, heard it said in an episode of 'Friends' and have googled it but the only thing I can come up with is that possibly a reference to a drink with some 'red necks'??? Is that supposed to be funny as the canned laughter kicked in as soon as it was said.

thanks,

Appalachia is one of the old time towns in America, so having cocktails there would be like giving a Geordie a glass of wine instead of a pint of Newcastle brown if you get my meaning. This is American humour don`t forget.
lol, I did look the word "Appalachia" for you warpig and found said town....but as I didn't understand it's reference to that and cocktails I didn't post anything.

As PeaPod says- it must be an American thing! :-)

cheers guys, cocktail anyone?
Well, I don't know what the cocktails part was meant to be about...but Appalachia refers to the Appalachian mountains. The region is stereotypically considered to be the inbreeding capital of the world.

So Monica made the comment because she thought that the couple she and Joey were having drinks with were brother and sister. Hence her shock when they were openly flirting with each other.
