Why do we need a disaster to tell us something isn't going to work? "Smart" motorways and now unguided steel missiles, madness.

Smart motorways are a disaster, they are dangerous and should be abandoned and who ever thought them up should be disciplined.

//It has a chance on motorways, well that's the first area to aim at but we are still light years from even that.//
A light years a measure of distance not time.... but yes it may be a year or two away, maybe 5, maybe it will never work but at least they tried, but its worth a try if it can make roads safer in the end, save on fuel and be convenient then go for it
Question Author
bob: "How else can you test them." - indeed but generally when things are wheeled out to the public they are 99.99% certain they are correct. They are light years away here.

bob:"A light years a measure of distance not time..." - it's a hyperbole bob, please don't turn into a troll.
// Planes are flown by computers, the pilots don't do much. //

true most of the time. Pilots earn their crust when the unexpected happens.

no computer (currently) on earth could have landed QF32 safely. pilotless planes are years away, indeed flying itself may be ended by green policy long before then.
My friend's son became a pilot a few years ago. The first time he flew a real plane it was full of holiday makers. I was shocked
Slightly OT. American Airlines are to make 50% of their pilots African- American women. (although they only represent 6% of the population)
I predict this will be a classic Get Woke Go Broke decision.
I'm loathe to travel by air at the best of times without an affirmative action pilot coming into calculations.
New generation planes will have 2 cockpit crew - a pilot and a dog.

The pilot is there to feed the dog / the dog is there to bite the pilot if he touches anything!

I 100% agree william, madness.
// Smart motorways are a disaster //

congestion on some parts of the road network was chronic, but there was resistance for expensive and intrusive widening schemes. the "quart into a pint pot" idea had to be tried first, if it failed there'd be a better argument for widening. the M42 trial scheme was a success, it improved journey reliability by 27%, reduced the number of accidents and cut emissions by 10%. but it also involved an awful lot of expensive technology, costly to install, operate and maintain. so when it came to rolling it out elsewhere, the bean counters watered down the specification to make it more fiscally attractive - and, as we now know, more dangerous in the event of a stranding event, which was also itself more likely.
Question Author
mush, yes they put in less refuges but the idea is flawed anyway, no vehicle breaks down conveniently so it doesn't matter how may refuges there are, we need a hard shoulder.
