When I was little my mother seemed to be sewing buttons on every night. The mangle really did mangle them and later the spin dryer had a good go.
I don't think I have lost a button on anything for at least 30 years.

I have my great gran's darning mushrooms. It was she who taught me to sew, and how to darn.
I always have a pair of socks on the needles (I use 5 needles when making socks, you get a smoother transition). My BIL and nephews all work outside, so ask for hand knit socks for xmas. (Imagine a man asking for socks for a gift!!)
The warmth in a sock yarn is really great. I would never use an ordinary wool though. Has to be the 75% wool one.
Brilliant ferlew!
I think even simple skills like this are a lost art now. Young people today are much more likely to buy a new shirt.
Well sowing done, button reaffixed
