I have had a really strange sensation in my left eardrum for the last 36 hours. It's like the ear drum is twitching with a kind of thumping noise. A bit like the eardrum is being punched. I have been aware that I am a bit congested at the moment but I am very in touch with my ears and know what they should feel like with congestion/otitis media etc. I have heard of MEM tinnitus. Could it be that?

237........your diagnosis is right on the money...you don't need me -;) Classical symptoms of MME or better known as Middle ear myoclonus.....Intermittent contractions of the 2 main middle ear muscles....tensor tympanic and stampeding. Cause..not known Treatment reassurance. It is not a precursor of mental problems. Relax.

Sounds a bit familiar to me. I don't know the cause, but it's one of those things that I ignore, and it goes away. Perhaps wax or congested tubes. Maybe sqad can be more helpful.

Mental problems? I don't have any of those. Thanks Sqad. I'm going to bury my head in the sand and hope it goes away.
We all have mental problems especially on AB lol.
It will go away.
Be careful, any otitis may morph into ostrichitis.

Thanks Sqad. When I think of what I have put my eardrums through over the last 35 years, I`m surprised I can hear anything at all really.
I get a distinct 'pinging' sound and sensation in my right ear. On occasion, I can bring it on by pulling my earlobe away from my skull, or tilting my head over my left shoulder and pressing/pulling my the skin of my neck down towards my right shoulder.
It's more amusing than alarming... :o)
I have experienced this sort of thing very briefly on a few occasions over decades. I have always thought it an aural equivalent to the tiny but irritating twitches of the eyelid one sometimes gets.
Hmmm, have you seen the documentary Fantastic Voyage, jack? :-)

It was working on the 747 for donkeys years that shot my ears to pieces. I loved that plane but it did give me tinnitus.
LoL....Dougie.
I have Raquel Welch in my eustachian tube..?!?

JtH: Doctor, Doctor - I get this odd sensation when I'm // pulling my earlobe away from my skull, or tilting my head over my left shoulder and pressing/pulling my the skin of my neck down towards my right shoulder. //

Doc: Stop doing that then

;0)
LoL....
I can go for months without it happening but when I have had an episode, I can provoke it into happening by the measures I described above.
I have been sitting here pulling at my ear (I was wondering how long it would take Mrs JtH to ask me what exactly I was doing) but not even the smallest 'ping'..... :o(
Sonar so good.
