Raymonde De Seze was a judge
hollow nature = N(atur)E

s - ne = eze
Can't explain the Z but hollow nature is NE (i.e. nature hollowed out) in see (judge)
Thank you jj109 - I didn't know about Monsieur De Seze.
I can see n(atur)e but can't see seze as judge
The clue contained the word 'unknown', (probably rather than 'shown'!) that gives the Z.
i think jj109 has it
.....and here is me thinking that I had solved it!!!!
I prefer See, judge, N(atur)e with Z, unknown inside!
JJ, I'm sure you would have, with the correct wording...
changed my mind now if 'unknown' is in the clue :-)

Many thanks JJ109, novalis and dannyk13: my knowledge of the French aristocracy in the 18th century is clearly lacking.
Missel - it isn't your knowledge of history that is lacking, it is the fact that you have not typed the clue correctly!
Question Author
Sorry, yes, "shown" should have been "unknown". Thanks for correction Neveracrossword
Missel, thanks - we got it sorted in the end!
A coorect clue makes all the difference.
