why do male and female shirts have buttons on different sides?

Because gentlemen dressed themselves, whereas ladies were dressed by their maids. As most maids (like other people) are right handed, it is easier for them to do them up if the buttons are 'wrong way' for the lady (if you see what I mean).

Also Gents shirts button left over right so that when the sword is drawn from the left side by the right hand the handle will not snag the shirt.
