It is best not pruned at all.
If it is getting to touch the ground and you must 'raise it's skirts', next Jne - not before - go underneath and cut back from the inside, you can take off lengths of about 2-3 ft without ruining the overall shape of the tree.
If it is getting too wide then you are in trouble because it's virtually impossible to reduce the size and retain the character of the tree.

My weeping cherry has branches growning straight up! How do I get them to weep? Should I crop the top?
