The adjective 'sound' means healthy or in good condition. So, anything that fits that description was for centuries described as being "as sound as a bell". With our more recent tendency to favour rhyming phrases, that was altered to "as sound as a pound".

Perhaps the reference was also to the good quality and dependability of the British currency as compared to the more volatile money found elsewhere in the world in the great days of the Empire!

In East Londons not so distant past, much of the industry hinged around the trading of foreign goods bought in by foreign vessels.Much of the produce had to be purchased by weight and therefore all produce was sold in the reliable pound ( 2.2kilos) "Sound" replacing reliable in this case.
