Can your work say No for you to attend Jury Service?

If you are called up for Jury Service but your work can't let you go (For Example) due to the fact that they are short staffed.Is this allowed?

No. If they refuse to allow you to attend your jury service they will be in contempt of court and could go to prison!

They are not obliged to pay you, unless it is specified in the terms and conditions of your contract.
Yes - you can apply for deferment to a later date when things are less hectic.
You can defer for up to 12 months.
