Welcome to Title Builder Beta.

This small piece of kit is designed to make building your Quiz, Crossword or Puzzle question more effective. It should make finding your question easier for others and, the easier it is to find, the more likely someone is to answer it!

To build an easy to find question title simply select the paper and quiz, enter the quiz number if relevant and fill in the Publication Date. Once you’re happy click “Build Title” and the information should populate the Title field. Fill in the final required details of your question as you normally would, and click submit.

As this is a Beta we only have a limited number of papers and quizzes listed. If you think your favourite Quiz, Crossword or Puzzle should be listed here don’t hesitate to contact us.

Remember: You do not have to use the title builder - simply enter the title and question as you normally would and click submit!

i don't think the setter understands the mechanics of cryptic clues

I know next to nothing about what is allowable or not in the world of cryptic clues. I've just picked up on some of the 'indicators' in order to help break the Alphapuzzle. (Perhaps the setter is from the same cloth?)
Nevertheless, this one seemed straightforward enough - a partial anagram of 'canal' (or 'a canal') indicated by the use of 'mainly'. Any suggestions for how it should have been done?

The way these clues seem to operate is that the solver doesn't know: 1. how long the answer is; 2. what type of clue it is (anagram, letter sequence, etc.); & 3. where the answer is going to fit in the grid. There's only one clue per puzzle so it can be a bit more challenging than a 'proper' crossword with, say, 25 clues. In any case, the clues aren't usually at all complicated.
At the end of the day, these puzzles can be solved without using the answer to the clue - It just takes longer & is more difficult.
