I have the most awful nightmares and have done so for many years. Over the last 6 months though, when I have a nightmare I am able to tell myself, during the nightmare, that it' a bad dream and I shout 'wake up' and then I do wake up. My husband said I do actually shout the words 'wake up'. Is this unusual? Thanks all.

I don’t know if it’s all that unusual. It sounds like a form of lucid dreaming, where you know you’re in a dream and can control it. Only in your case you choose to wake up instead of steering the dream into something nicer.

Anxiety is causing a lot more people to remember their dreams with the current situation.
I had a dream last night that Prince Harry was madly in love with me and it got a bit, shall we say, sexy!!

Minnie - I can say to myself when having a bad dream that 'this is only a dream'. It's happened many times.
With practice you can also learn to change dreams, so you can see them through in a safe way. Remember recurring dreams can be a warning that something needs addressing in your waking life. Solve the problem. The dream may go away
I used to suffer from terrible nightmares back in the days when I was 'coming down' off heavy drinking sessions. Don't know how I quite did it but I taught myself to shout myself awake. Though I no longer drink to such excess (hardly ever, really) nightmares are very rare but I still employ this strategy. On one occasion my next door neighbour was banging on my front door, concerned for my well-being, so loud had I been shouting.
I can do it sometimes. The worst is when you think you have woken yourself out of the dream but the waking is part of the dream.
So true, woof. :-(((
