Apparently gun shops are on the list of essential stores to stay open for business during the coronavirus lockdown.

Imagine the confrontations in panic buying now.

As essential as abortion.

Both kill people.

However I think in the US people in this case are actually worried about the overreach of the state. Not necessarily Washington and Trump but if you look at some states and cities the mayors and governors are threatening to close places permanently. On the one hand they initiate lockdown and shelter in place orders with some rules on arrest etc and scream blue murder that Trump isn’t doing enough for their state or city. So when Trump then says he might get involved is told by the same mayors and governors that would be an act of war.

People over there are worried about looting, theft and all sorts of things.

But the big but here is that all the unemployed will now, thanks to the Democrats be better off on benefits than working so in the long run will be OK

And it’s not as easy as simply walking into Walmart and buying a gun over the counter. It simply doesn’t happen that way. But the MSM never let a story slip past that they can’t spin.
Karl, yes most live in cities but still millions dont.

And huge swathes of the USA do not have someone who can turn up quickly once you have dialled 911. Just look at the maps to see why.

I am not saying I agree with what they do but just I can see why. On top of that there are estimated 400 million guns in the USA. You cant just change laws - it simply wouldn't work. You would get a civil war anyway if you did.
Spicerack - // Hence, all the liberals who've never agreed with gun ownership are scrabbling to get hold of one. (and finding it wasn't as easy as they were led to believe) //

Am I interpreting your post correctly - are you a supporter of the right to bear arms in the US?

Even the most naïve of political students would be aware that to even suggest curtailing gun ownership in the US is political suicide.

President Obama made a few quiet noises about it in his last term, when her personally had nothing to lose, but he still had to be mindful not to paint his party as supporters of gun legislation, which would have handed election victory to the Republicans before a vote was cast.
Needing a gun to defend oneself against someone who also has a gun is a circular argument. Laws can and are changed - unless the legislators are hostages to irrational forces, such as religion and/or similar persuasions (holy 2nd amendment). Take the guns away across the board and you arrive at the European situation - there is no suggestion anywhere in Europe that members of the public need guns to survive, whatever their remoteness.

It would make sense to say everyone needs to have a fire extinguisher, big (even huge) ones if living far away from a fire service, but guns.....

What I was saying is that this is a uniquely USA problem and it is their problem for them to solve, but they tie their own hands behind their backs, a bit like governments which rely on the support of the clergy and/or evoke deities in their rhetoric in building up their legitimacy.
Guns sure must wear out quickly, if gun shops must remain open during coronavirus.

Here, we close garden centres.
Have lived, worked and travelled extensively across America and at no point felt I needed to purchase a gun
