The X Files movie was released June '98 (US), Aug '98 (UK).

Those dates fell between the airing of Seasons 5 and 6 in the US but probably while Season 5 was still being shown in the UK.

I recently watched all of the X Files episodes, got to the end of season 5 and started season 6 and hadn't a clue what was going on.
