I have a 20 foot long privet hedge in my back garden, which i chopped right back to ground level about 18 months ago. Its now grown to around 4 foot, how can i kill it off without having to dig up all roots? it will have to be done manually as i don't have access in my back garden to bring in a mechanical digger. All solutions need to be pet friendly.

copper nails are a great killer
that's what I use for trees ...cut it as close to the ground as you can ... and hammer loads of copper nails in the top of the stump ... anywhere that supplies roofing materials 'should' have them.
You can buy a product called ROOT OUT just cut all to ground level then apply ROOT OUT.
it's called rootout, but it doesn't very well
chop it down, cut some grooves into the stump top (not 100% necessary, but more effective) and pour petrol or diesel onto them.
or you could hire a stump grinder/ get a local tree surgery firm to do it.
