Sorry for sounding thick, if im researching something for an essay im doing in the archives of a newspaper website can other people (who havent got access to my computer) see what articles i was reading or what keywords i was searching on, ie looking at the same site as me from a different pc also would the newspaper web site operator be able to see what individual pc's are reading or what keywords are searched

Most likely your IP address will be logged by the website, possibly with details of which pages you visited. It is also possible that they could log which keywords you searched for.
Just the owners of that website I would imagine, and its not likely they would be able to track it to you, they would hold maybe key words, pages visited as Kerplunk mentions.
