One possibility is the Land Registry, although it doesn't have all properties yet. If it has yours you'll be able to see all the deeds and get some of the history.

You will have to pay to get the info (3, I think)

If it isn't registered, your own deeds will have a lot of info. Your solicitor or building society probably have these.

After that, old maps are usually interesting; I have one from before my house was built, it used to be allotments. These can be seen online, or often come up for sale on ebay.

If you are motivated enough, the county records office may have loads about your locality and quite possibly your house. These are usually free to access, but the drawback is you have to go in person and find it yourself, in office hours.
You can look on the 1901 census if your house is old enough and it will tell you who lived in your house then. http://www.1901censusonline.com/ Even if you don't find out, the website interesting anyway.

Thanks for the answers.I tried the land registry but not too much history there.
Further to what Ed said, if you're really motivated, you can get access to lots of other censii(?) but not online. You have to go and physically search them.
Catso, all the census from 1841 from 1901 are online, you just have to pay to see them. (1881 is free).
