Kipchoge is already the world record holder for the marathon distance, which he set in Berlin last year.
Today's event was to see if a human could run the marathon distance in less than two hours.
He succeeded admirably.
Unfortunately it's a case of "rules is rules". I'd like to think that the IAAF might reconsider this but knowing the intransigence of rule makers I doubt it.
Look, it’s really simple. A man has run 26 miles (roughly) in under 2 hours. That’s some achievement under any circumstances.
Danny, you know the answer but just in case you don’t. Paula’s record was set in a race for both men and women. The other was set in a race for women only. Quite what that’s got to do with today’s event is beyond me.
It's a fantastic achievement, well done to all concerned.
Angie, the point is that Paula Radcliffe's record was set in the London marathon. not a recognised competitive race. One of the reasons given as to why Kipochoge's record is not official.
You should have seen me run when I was working, the bus late, and on my final warning! Wow I was like lightning and kept my job :-)
Danny “ The Virgin Money London Marathon is run under British Athletics, World Para Athletics and IAAF rules which clearly state that the marathon is an athletics event“.
A great achievement.
Not a world record for obvious reasons but nonetheless momentous.
And,with the women’s record smashed today, a momentous weekend for the event.
