The army camp that I live next to was back in action today (it’s always quiet over the summer) but they appear to have changed where the helicopters take off and land. Their ‘normal’ helicopter now flies (5 times this afternoon) straight over my conservatory as it takes off (the crew waved to thing 1 they were so low) and the visiting chinook lands and takes off about 300m in front of my conservatory. Can’t wait for the Osprey to visit :)

In 1956 , when I was stationed in Malta, our flat used to shake when the Vulcan bombers took off and flew overhead on the way to Suez.
Appreciate this is an old thread but an Osprey flew over our house last night. Green lights on the end of the rotor arms! Coooool.

Aren’t they amazing? They’re so ugly that they are cool and when they fly in the dark they’re like a some sort of alien space craft. I’m currently waiting for the chinook to take off - seems to take ages for the rotors to get up to speed.
If you think it is noisy on the ground I know it's a darn sight noisier inside a Chinook. I flew to Alderney out of RAF Odiham many years back and ear defenders were a must. The loadmaster decided to lower the ramp halfway across the ditch so we could do some ramp riding with harnesses attached. My flight suit was immediateley covered with hydraulic oil blown inward from a leaking rear turbine.. "They all leak like sieves," said the loadmaster laconically as he pointed to a massive puddle on the deck which had gone unnoticed until then.
I lived in Oakham in 1966/8 and the Vulcans from RAF Cottesmore used to go right over our house doing ‘circuits and bumps’. We thought they were wonderful.
