You might try reading "The China Study," by T. Colin Campbell. It makes a strong medical case for vegetarianism.
http://www.peta2.com/p2vsk2_flash/ might have some unsavoury detail you don't want to know about, but it may well be as good a reason to make a change.

For the best choice in what to eat I would also nag you to take advantage of your local farmers' market, farm shop, box scheme or local greengrocers etc. The basic point is you can save money but you will also get food in season - which is more nutritious, will be eco friendly - think food miles here - and also supports local ecnomies better than any supermarket.

Supermarket veg etc is, through the demands of supply chains logistics, food that has been stored. The other options you have like pulses, beans, mushrooms of course, tofu (smoked, fried, silken, firm) and a stack of other tasty things means you can easily change and hardly notice. If you have a good asian / Chinese market or shop near you have a look at their ranges too - loads of choices there if you think you will crave 'flavour'.

What you will feel is more healthy, de-toxed, better digestion and probably with a few more quid in the pocket. Veg Soc is a good source of info, and see the Veg info here too: http://www.vegetarian.org.uk/index.htm

Nickmo is correct in all but one fact...you may develop an exploding botty!
