Seems the judge used it as punishment rather than compensation. There ought to be a law.
Big outfits usually ensure there are innocent seeming loopholes so you don't have a leg to stand on years later when they want to push you around. Seems this one failed to get advice drawing the contract up.

It's a ridiculous amount that bears no relation to the grievance caused.

If the argument is that needs to be large to have some punitive effect on the company involved, then by all means give them a £20 million fine, and her £1 million compensation. As it stands it's ludicrous.
