A bit like a Mars bar. You can get them here in speciality shops.
They are an aquired taste, I wouldn't have another one if I was offered one, and I would normally jump at the chance for any chocolate. I am not surprised people who go and live in America miss Cadbury's.
I find Hershey chocolate to have a kind of a sour aftertaste - I much prefer Mars or Cadbury chocolate myself
I am sure that there is some wonderful American chocolate, not all British choc bars are that great, are they? But Hershey Bars are best avoided.
They're nothing special. They look like chocolate, and they taste a bit like it (although a bit bland), but they're not a patch on Mars or Cadburys.

My favourite American sweets - sorry, candy - are Peppermint Patties.
They are horrible.
I've had some of one, it tasted like chocolate mixed with sick, literally. Some people like the taste but I won't even smell one now.
it taste like cheap chocolate , yano like a cheap easter egg kinda thing.
The reason Hershey bars were made , was so that even the poooerest ppl could aforrd chocolate , cus many a year ago back in the olden days chocolate in america was very expensive.
I agree with aceizace, the first word I associate with Hershey is vomit. Sounds improbable but I assure you it's true!
It's the sour milk taste that makes it taste like sick!
lol, I am so glad I'm not the only one who thinks they taste like sick. My ex, a septic, bought home a huge bag of Hersheys Kisses, so I opened them when he was out, tried one, thought they were off and binned them!!! he went mad!!!
The rumour was that the inventer had a problem with his sinuses and had no real taste sence, that from a good USA citizen lol....

Thanks for all your answers. I'm very surprised they sell so many given some of the vivid descriptions.
I'm American and can't stand Hershey's. Some of us call it "garbage chocolate." It's too harsh - sour was a good word for it. I wait for the Cadbury's (dairy milk or fruit&nut) to go on sale, then I stock up like mad. The first time I visited London, I thought I was in heaven when I found wee Cadbury bars in vending machines. (The 5 oz. bars are sold here.)

Milton Hershey was a wonderful philanthropist, and Hershey Park is a fun place to take the kids, but proceed with caution. Hershey modified the recipe for its Symphony bars, which are infinitely better, but still no shakes to the lovely Cadbury.
My thoughts on tasting were "this tastes like sick"
Purists will say that the fats in chocolate should come from the cocoa itself. The problem is that this gives the chocolate a 'waxy' texture, and many don't like the taste, as in Hershey Bars. UK chocolate contains vegetable oils instead, giving a smoother texture and sweeter taste, as in Cadburys. There was a big fuss some years back when the cocoa fat manufacturers tried to stop the vegetable oil manufacturers calling their products 'chocolate'. They were told where to go.
