MIL has taken out insurance with several providers that all cover the same thing.
Whilst tryitto sort out her financial crisis this has all come to light, she is stating that they phoned her up claiming to have purchased her insurance and asked her to set up a DD which of course she did.
As she is already covered elsewhere is there anything we can do to cancel this as they are refusing to let her cancel it!

Thanks. The situation is still not clear to me though.
Did she have such an "emergency accommodations and repairs" policy with Nationwide. If not then ask the provider for details of how she was signed up to it.
Was she with British Gas boiler cover? If so, does she have it alongside the 'replacement' one?
Similar query for washing machine.

Yes all insurance is running beside each other.
okay, so they can't have 'taken over' these policies so it was fraud/misselling.
Good luck with getting money back. Who are teh companies- if household names you should succeed. If fraudsters/unregulate dcompanies then maybe just put it down to experience or try the regulators/ombudsman. In fact ask the bank to get the money back if the companies won't provide evidence that it was a bona fide sign up.

teacake....much more useful than your childish remarks....

Managed to cancel some it’s this one that’s being difficult
GB I don't think so ( childish remarks ) FF got round to the same conclusion as me ( fraud/ misspelling ) but just taken a long time to get there. What was your input?
Its quite easy to forget exactly what is included in your home insurance and take out duplicate cover for individual items and circumstances when offered it. I'm not a fan of extended warrentees on washing machines etc, but I can understand people agreeing to them when pushed.

To me it doesnt sound as though these duplicate insurances were necessarily miss sold or fraudulent, so bets to appeal to their better nature and focus on the vulnerability of MIL to cancel the covers she really doesnt need.

In the meantime cancel the Direct Debits in writing.
What a mess RR, I sympathise. How are you going to stop her being conned in the future? Can't really take away her phone I suppose?
if they are reputable firms, it's ofter easier and quicker to sort it out on FB/twitter
When we were sorting my M-I-L finances when she had dementia, and she couldn't remember any of her passwords etc, we got a couple sorted on FB
Sadly as people age they are targeted by many companies that offer unnecessary, and in most cases useless insurance cover, they also know that with ageing they tend to worry more, so they add a few worry factors into their adds, and chat. If you read, and even understand the terms & conditions of any sort of cover, ( and most older folk don't) you will find that claiming is sometimes made impossible, or a complete con. If you have older relations the best thing you can do is try and take charge of their bank accounts, easy said than done I know.

We don’t want to claim we just want to cancel so that they don’t have any more money from her.
At the end of the day it’s for her sons to decide what happens now with regards to her financial matters I am just trying to sort the mess out
How did you discover the mess?
Question Author
Looking through her paperwork for a boiler service
How many are outstanding - now
it seems to be one....
are they insurances or service contracts?
I hve never heard of insurance suing over a payment - they usually stop cover and they MUST say they are going to do that

If it is one company - try their complaints procedure.
You have to cancel in writing and then tell the bank you ( she ) has done so and they will act
BUT it is also commonplace for the co to ring up and ask the lucky insuree - you dont really want that do you?
and having witnessed this, they really do say - no no - no I dont want to cancel - I want to keep it on !

whichi means that your real issue is that you dont have too many insurances , but someone who is losing control of reality and is on a sucker list .....
if there is no contract you should be able to opt out of insurance at any time. If there is a contract you can request to view it.

I think it will be hard to reclaim needed (but paid for) insurance. As if you needed to claim whilst paying it, they would have paid out.
UN needed (but paid for) !!
