When I first became really interested in music in the early 70s I loved TRex etc but was also attracted to early rock'n'roll. The established view was that this started with Bill Haley in or around1 954. But over the years I've heard more and more records from before Bill Haley and Ii've come to the conclusion that rock and roll wa already around several years earlier.
I remember John Peel saying this was the first - in 1951. Great song- but there are eaelier ones surely

The OP isn't about Punk, 12 bar blues, Rockabilly, Jazz, Bee-Bop, (all definable) or whatever, it's about "Rock & Roll"

I ask again, what is it?
The start of Rock 'n Roll for a young VE was not based on a technical analysis but on the the fact that kids were doing it rather than over-weight middle-aged men. So, forgetting Bill Haley, we got this:

Very funny Victor Borge clip, Tony- but I don't think it fits any definition of rock'n'roll (nor rap nor punk), although I accept we have established that the boundaries of musical genres are blurred and music evolves without new genres being created overnight
