Ive recently split form someone, he did not take it very well. We managed to talk in a civil manor about sending each others possesions back. He owes me money and said told me he had sent it in the post on the same day that I returned his belongings to him. Over a week later I have not recieved the money. He is now saying I am lying to try and get him to send the money again. Im desperate as I am a student and cant afford to be without the extra cash. What can I do?? I have no evidence that he owes me this money. x

Without evidence, not much, I'm afraid.

Did he send a cheque? He'll be able to tell if you cash it, and/or he can cancel it (free) and send you another.

Did he send cash? (I have to say, a daft thing to do) Did he send it Special Delivery? It can be traced.
how does he say he sent it? by post? by hand? was it cash, Postal order, cheque?
He has no evidence he paid you, do you have proof that he owes you it? is it worth taking your claim to small claims court?

he said he sent it cash and through his works postal service in a jiffy bag so that no-one would be able to tell it was money and steal it. Hes a fabulous liar though and parts of me believe he has done it to spite me.
I don't think there's a lot you can do, unfortunately.

I'm sorry but thats the chance you take when you lend anyone any money
Can I ask, is it alot?
A bit of lateral thinking: do you know his mother? You could try explaining the story to her and see if she could apply a bit of pressure. (Long shot, I know)

It was a reasonable ammount yes, put it this way It would make alot of difference if I had it back. I just believe its his way of trying to hurt me for breaking up with him. Hes very young and very immature. I could try talking to his dad, I didnt think of that.
I think you just need to forget about it. If it was a resonable amount and as you said you're a student then maybe you shouldnt have given it to him in first place. I'm not trying to sound harsh but a few of my mates have had the same problem and usually its a bigger weight off your mind just to let them keep it.

It was always a risk loaning him it, and was due to get it back very soon after we split but couldnt stomach him any longer. You're right maybe I should just forget it. Just cant believe there are so many dishonest people out there.
I know but he gets away with thinking he's winding you up which in a way at the moment he is. So just turn round say oh thats ok I've got it now, that will wind him up even more, and confuse him if he never sent it in the first place :-) Lifes too short to worry, Just learn from it :-)
I would have thought the onus was on him to prove he posted it. If you send cash off for goods received to a mail order catalogue and they say they haven't received it,I would think, without some receipt saying you had, then you'd have to pay again. Seems a similar scenario.
I'd nip into CAB and ask their advice. Next time he's daft enough to send cash by post, send it registered.
If your ex wrote you saying he sent you the money, then that may count as evidence it was owed.
Do you really want it that bad, coz it might be easier to forget about it and just move on. But if you feel like being nasty then go to the CAB or solicitors they might scare him a bit by asking for his bank statement where it shows that he withdrew that reasonable amount.
This happened to me as well, so I can sympathise with you. I got in touch with a solicitor and they wrote him (my ex) a letter with the info I had given them about when, how much and why I had lent him the money, and gave him a month to pay up or it would go further. I got a cheque within the week. Now, I went to a solicitor that my father deals with, so they didn't charge me, but I gave a donation to the local hospice. Is there anyone you know who works in a solicitor's office? Can you contact citizen's advice? I'm sure they could help. Good luck.
