The engines were actually on the rear fuselage rather than the wings.

One varient had to have a fourth engine, just used on take off. It was just too damned heavy to get airborne safely with the three.

1ozzy, I too went there as a child of the 10 quid tourists but we travelled out there by plane. I did see the SS Canberra once on a day trip to Sydney it was a great looking ship. We came back though as mother was homesick. We came back on the RHMS Ellinis. Lovely 5 week trip with going through the Panama Canal being the highlight of it.
How long did your family stay downunder Shedman?
Where did they live while here?
We lived in a place called Bradfield park for about 6 months, terrible place, migrants one end, down and outs the other end. By that time my parents had bought a block of land and a house was built. If not I'm sure mum would have had us back in the UK.

My first flight from Luton to Hannover on 7 Apr 1973 (18yo) wasn't anything special and i honestly cannot remember anything of it, but 4 days later, from RAF Gutersloh to Aldergrove, Belfast was more memorable. It took place on a Lockheed Hercules where comfort was the least of considerations - think Boneshaker bicycles. It was memorable for 2 reasons; one of the RAF crew invited me to sit on the lowered tailgate with him for a smoke and, despite being terrified of heights, i did so. And, when the plane landed, i was expecting it to be met with a hail of bullets, so i hung back and allowed others to disembark ahead of me. When i didn't hear the bullets, i thought the 'enemy' were waiting for me. Such was the power of one-sided news bulletins i had viewed constantly for almost a year.
1ozzy, we stayed just over 2 years. The rest of the family loved it but mother was homesick really from day one. We stayed at Unanderra Hostel which wasn't too bad and I went to school at Port Kembla. Father did look at buying but I think he knew mother wouldn't stick it. She is in her late 80s now and still lives a couples of miles from where she was born.
