Why are the apples falling off my trees?

Hi
I have several apple trees in my garden and the apples just keep falling off them. I know I should expect some 'windfalls' but this is getting beyond a joke as there won't be any left on the trees for picking in september at this rate. I thought this might just be due to growing a certain type of apple, but there are four different sorts and it,s happening to three of them.
Anyone got a solution to this problem please?

My guess is that it is due to the weather - too much heat, not enough water.

All the plants, trees, lawns are suffering.

Did you have the proper early drop? (June drop)
I have just collected a tray of immature damsons from our lawn and I think it is lack of water its up setting I know
Ethel is spot on,not enough water .
I agree with the above posts, its not unusual to lose some at this time of the year but this year, with the heat and lack of rain the apples are falling fast!
I'm still hoping to get a few apple pies though.
Agree with all the others. I suspect whatever rain we get from now on will not be sufficient to stop the fruit drop and we can expect very poor crops of all tree fruit in the UK this autumn, especially in the south of England..
If you're not in a hosepipe ban area you can try giving the wide area around the roots a thorough soaking but I suspect that the soil is now bone dry for at least a couple of feet below the surface so you'd need an awful lot of water. If you're in a hosepipe ban area, I doubt whether even saving up all you "grey" water will be enough even to effectively water the fruit on one tree. I've been using all our grey water to keep my domestic blackberry bushes alive and despite thembeing genrous croppers the berries this summer are so small as to be useless.
