Does anyone have any hints and tips how to rid my home of fruit flies? They’re driving me barmy

Keep all fruit in the fridge. Check for veg or fruit that started to rot. Check to see if anything has dropped under any cupboards or such. Any beer, wine or soft drinks left exposed, even the dregs in a glass attracts them. Don't leave waste food in indoor bins fruit flies can get into anything

Get rid of any old vegetables you might have forgotten about.
But me too.
Don't know what they are but tiny. From a carpet maybe?

Spiders... don't get rid of the smaller ones I let a couple loiter on my kitchen ceiling, and really really clean everything. Even a sticky mark is a banquet to a fruit fly

I use one of those old-fashioned netting covers for fruit. Poundland has 2 for a pound.

Do not put bananas in the refrigerator unless you want to ruin them. Although they much prefer fruit, bananas being something of a favourite, fruit flies feed on the most surprising things when nothing else is available. At the right stage, they will go for potatoes, onions, etc. The advice so far to check for every scrap of vegetable matter and deal with it is good advice. There are smells which deter fruit flies (peppermint, eucalyptus - google them) and planting these around wherever they might settle would wok to a considerable degree. It has always seemed to me that fruit flies are attracted to the smell of vinegar but maybe I am wrong.
