when i emptied my wastepaper basket yesterday, there was a banana skin in the bottom, that had obviously been there for ages. A swarm of fruit flies flew out as i tipped it into the main bin.

These annoying little things are all over the place now. How do I get rid of them?

Will they grow into bigger flies?

Put a banana skin in someone else's bin. That should sort it :-)
They won't get any bigger and if there's no food or drink they will go eventually.

where do they come from in the first place?
From you putting banana skins in an open bin.
Don't know but we gwt lots of them!
''where do they come from in the first place?''

A fruitfly was attracted to the putrid odour emanating the rotting banana skin and laid it's eggs on it, which turned in to maggots and then flies...

or the banana was already riddled with fruit fly eggs and lava when you ate it ;-p

I catch them with chopsticks.

btw, for some extra boring info, we had to study the colour of fruit flies' eyes as part of the genetics section of our biology course. zzzzzz
